Alice E. Dechene, 86

Dan McClelland

Alice E. Dechene, 86
Alice E. Dechene, 86,  went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on May 27, 2017. (1 John 5:13)
She left Parishville, N.Y. where she had resided with her Grandaughter Denise (Dechene) Taylor who was her main caregiver for the last four and a half years.
As the ravages of Parkinson's Disease had taken over Alice's body. Denise and her young family cared for her grandmother with amazing kindness and compassion.
The whole family thanks them for all the love they gave Alice in her final years. (John 15:16)
Born in Queens, N.Y. to William and Edna Dineen on December 18, 1930 she
was the seventh born to them out of nine children and was the youngest girl. In 1942 her father was sent to Sunmount Veterans Hospital when a spot was discovered on his lung.
In 1943 Mr. and Mrs. Dineen and their five youngest children moved to Tupper Lake permanently.
On September 11, 1950 Alice married Walter P. Krehl whose family had also moved to Tupper Lake from Buffalo, N.Y. because of Sunmount Veterans' Hospital.
They had four children: Edward, Michael,T homas and Alice.
Alice later married Dennis Dechene on August 21, 1971. They had two children, William and Kathleen.
Most people remember Alice working in the restaurant business. First working as a waitress in her sister Margaret and Joe Haile's fine dining establishments, The Blue Anchor and The Holiday House. Later Alice worked as a bartender in other popular landmarks, including Mason's, Canales, The Park Restaurant, Tupper Lake Country Club, Saranac Inn Golf Course and even a stint as a short order cook at Roy's Restaurant.
She loved all people! Loved to tell stories, and jokes, even sang Irish ballads for her customers. Alice had a lovely singing voice and sang often to her children but also was in the local Catholic Church Choir and sang solos for the Christmas and Easter Cantatas.
She was a master at multi-tasking, making the libations and keeping her customers, young and old happy.
Alice was always reading medical journals and certainly would have made an excellent nurse possibly even a doctor, but she took to volunteering for the local rescue squad instead, serving our community for many years. She was one of the members of thefirst class of EMT's.
Alice was also a gifted writer and her children joked she was a frustrated English teacher as she was always correcting their writing. The profession Alice chose was being her children's mother first and foremost. Her children all remember her home-cooked meals, always topped off with a home baked dessert. Her hands were always busy, knitting sweaters for her daughters, baking cakes for friends' parties or funerals. She loved writing beautiful letters to cheer people up. Her children also remember their clothes being hung outside and especially the sheets even in the winter to get that extra fresh clean smell in them. She could take a chicken and get four meals for her family out of it.
Her generosity was abundant. On many occasions she gave people things just because they admired them. When people say "That person would give you the coat right off their backs!
Say her children: “That was our mother. She was our first teacher and taught in a very gentle manner. She taught us many life lessons that have been invaluable, like looking people in the eye when they are speaking to you and how to shake someone's hand. Mom was a hard worker and taught us a good work ethic, it didn't matter if you were digging ditches for a living, you better do a good job. We were told often, lilt doesn't cost anything to give someone a smile, sometimes it is the only kindness they have seen lately. Mom taught us resilience in the day of adversity .... keep on smiling and laughing and keep on living! She certainly taught by her example ... Thanks Mom! (Proverbs 22:6)”
“Her most important legacy however is leaving us all with her love of her Lord Jesus Christ. Our mom was always teaching us about God and His son Jesus Christ and how the Holy Spirit is our Helper and guide. She taught us we could know Him too if we sought Him with our whole heart (Jeremiah 29:13).”
Alice is survived by her children Edward Paul Krehl, Thomas Allen Krehl, Alice Dineen Lemieux and her husband Jim Lemieux, William Ernest Dechene and his wife Rachel (Benware) Dechene, Kathleen Mary Locke and her husband Joel. Her five grandchildren- Michael John Krehl and his wife Renee, Erin Elizabeth Parrott, William Ernest Dechene Jr. and his wife Samantha, Sarah Elizabeth Dechene and her fiance Patrick Barrett, and Denise Michaela and her husband James Taylor.
Alice is also survived by ten great-grandchildren- Ayden, Naomi, Alana, Alexis, Aleah, Elijah, Carter, Isaac, Annabelle, and Owen; two brothers Frank Dineen and his wife Erma, Tom and his wife Vickie.
She was predeceased by her parents, her brother William, five sistersMary, Margaret, Marion, Lillian, Eleanor and her infant son Michael John.
Following cremation a "Celebration of Life" service and interment will take place August 12, 2017. A reminder announcement with the details will appear in the paper.
The family would like to thank the wonderful nurses and workers from Hospice who helped provide care for our mother this past year and a half. It was such a blessing for our niece Denise and our mother loved the new friends.
Anyone wishing to remember Alice are asked to make a contribution to the Tupper Lake Rescue Squad or High Peaks Hospice.

Jamie Martin

Dan McClelland

Jamie Rose Martin passed suddenly, Wednesday, May 10, 2017 with nothing but love for her children and family in her heart.
Jamie loved her children Alexis Lynn and Aiden Joseph fiercely and gave her life for them. She valued her family above all.
Known as "Auntie Jamie" to Ella Rose, Danica Lynn, and Aleda Marie. She was the eldest daughter of Richard and Diane Martin, sister and mentor to Jennifer (Frank Tice III) and Richard.
Born on January 26, 1984 in Lake City, Florida, Jamie welcomed the world grabbing her ears with excitement. Thirteen days later, Jamie returned to her parents' hometown of Tupper Lake. There, she attended Holy Ghost Academy, moving to L.P. Quinn Elementary School in third grade.
At school, Jamie established life-long friendships. Her peers identified her as the girl with a strikingly large and genuine smile. She was a class helper and a hard-working student. Jamie continued her education at Tupper Lake Middle High School where she explored her gifts as an artist, student, and athlete. Jamie took challenging classes, dedicating herself to achievement. Jamie was steadfast in her efforts to make her parents proud and serve as an example for siblings Jennifer and Richard.
After graduating in 2002, Jamie proudly attended the State University of New York at Plattsburgh. Jamie's artistic aptitudes continued to grow there and her work was displayed in the Myers Fine Arts Building on campus, leaving passersby to marvel at her creations.
November 13, 2012, brought Jamie the first of two gifts that she treasured with each breath. Alexis Lynn, born in Saranac Lake, New York, greeted her family with her mother's larger-than-life smile. Three years later, on September 29, 2015 Jamie was gifted with joy at the birth of Aiden Joseph. His eyes immediately stole the hearts of those around him, sharing the same delightful sparkle as his mother.
As a mother, Jamie worked diligently to make certain Alexis and Aiden enjoyed every day. Her creative energies poured into caring for and loving her children. Their days were filled with cuddles and kisses. Jamie spent every moment ensuring that they were happy. Day trips, vacations, and birthdays were celebrated with tremendous joy.
Jamie's true calling was to bring joy and help to those with whom she connected. Any person she came in contact with, she touched in some way or another. A saying that comes to mind when one thinks of Jamie is, "Always leave people better than you found them. Hug the hurt. Kiss the broken. Befriend the lost. Love the lonely."
Jamie Rose is survived by her children, Alexis Lynn and Aiden Joseph. She leaves behind her parents, Richard and Diane Martin, along with siblings Jennifer (Frank Tice III) and Richard.

Ann Manson Main, 89
Ann Manson Main (Mrs. Robert Gordon Main, Sr.), aged 89, of Malone, died Thursday, May 18, 2017, at the residence of her son with whom she had made her home during the past decade. She was accompanied by her family and the care givers who had been a loving part of her life over decades, years, and months. She had been in failing health for the last year after a years-long struggle with post-polio syndrome.
Born May 25, 1927, in Malone, she was the younger daughter of Archie McCoy Manson and Lucy Jarvis Manson. Her mother was an immigrant from Quebec. Upon his return from World War I, her father sold his overcoat for three dollars in order to finance the purchase of a bicycle shop on Mill Street which ultimately became Manson Brothers Garage on Pearl Street.
She grew up on “French Hill” in Malone where she was surrounded by the love and support of her family and many other first generation Americans of French Canadian ancestry to whom she remained connected throughout her life. Living all of her life in Malone, she attended local public schools, first on Duane Street, then at Flanders Elementary School, and was graduated from Franklin Academy in 1944. She was the salutatorian of her class. The following year she was graduated from Marjorie Webster Junior College in Silver Springs, Maryland. During this period she was also employed in the office of United States Senator Alexander Wiley of Wisconsin as secretary to his speech writer. Upon her return to Malone, she was employed as a secretary in the offices of Frank J. Wagner, public accountant and auditor, and for Archie Hyde at the Hyde Drug Company where she had previously worked, during high school, as one of the iconic soda fountain girls. As a young girl she worked as an usher at the Franklin County Fair grandstand during afternoon horse racing and for the evening entertainment program, as well as a weed puller at Langdon Farms and as a sales clerk at Woolworth’s Department Store.
She was united in marriage with Robert G. Main, Sr., on August 27, 1950, in the priests’ parlor of the rectory at Notre Dame Church in Malone by Rev. Edward A. Tetrault. From then on she devoted herself to being a wife, mother, and homemaker. Judge Main predeceased her on February 2, 1998.
She was a life-long communicant of Notre Dame Church and St. André Bessette parish. She served her parish teaching religious education and was a volunteer director of religious education for several years. In the early 1960s, she founded the local St. Vincent de Paul store with Bea Nichols of St. John Bosco Church and Jean Partish of St. Joseph’s Church under the direction of the late Rev. Msgr. William J. Argy, then pastor of St. Joseph’s Church.
Following her husband’s death, she devoted herself to her family and to a number of charitable endeavors at her church, at the Alice Hyde Medical Center, the Academic Board of Trustees of Franklin Academy, and a number of other local charities. She delighted in helping others, and, as a polio survivor, many of her efforts were directed to ease the mobility needs of the physically handicapped. Her philanthropy was recognized by the Franklin County Bar Association in 2015 with the presentation to her of the Liberty Bell Award.
She was a close follower of current events, was an avid reader, and engaged in handwork which she delighted in sharing. She made many of her own clothes, and her self-designed and hand knit baby caps and jewelry can be found locally and around the world and were part of the inspiration for her daughter’s knitting books. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, children, and friends, and visited destination across her native land and around the world. But, most particularly, she delighted in being a homemaker. In recent years, as her own mobility diminished, she enjoyed the stream of visitors who came to her in friendship for conversation, comfort, and solace.
She was a member of the Notre Dame Altar and Rosary Society and the Alice Hyde Medical Center Auxiliary. In 2012 she was inducted into the Franklin Academy Academic Hall of Fame as salutatorian of the class of 1944.
She is survived by a son, Robert G. Main, Jr., and a daughter, Lucy Ann Main, both of Malone. She is also survived by two nephews and godsons, Charles Archie McKee and Andrew Manson McKee, and their families. The last of her generation of descendants of Alphonse Jarvis and Mary Bordeaux Jarvis, she is survived also by her Jarvis cousins of the next generation, Anne LaBaron Voss, James Dixon, Richard Dixon, Edward Dixon, Mary Alys Killian, and John Joseph Dixon and their families. Likewise, she is survived by the three cherished friends who assisted her family in watching over her, caring for her, and protecting her in the last years of her life: Daisy Raville, a friend of fifty years; Glenn Lamica who helped her since he was fourteen year old; and Eleanor Quigley, a companion for 15 years. The last years of her life were enhanced by the daily nursing care she received from Sherry LaFave, Kayla McCarthy, and Ellen Miller and by the skilled care of Gina Boyea, Crystal Villnave, and Heather Gratton.
Besides her parents and her husband of 47 years, she was predeceased by a sister and brother-in-law, Helen Alys McKee and Charles F. McKee; a sister-in-law, Charlotte M. Main; and her only niece and goddaughter, Bess McKee Hanna.
